Check the browser’s download list first
In most Windows browsers, press Ctrl and J together to open the download list. Look for the file and choose the folder icon or “Show in folder.” This opens File Explorer at the file’s actual location.
Look in the Downloads folder
- Press the Windows key and E to open File Explorer.
- Select Downloads in the left navigation.
- Choose Sort, then Date modified, so the newest files appear together.
- Look for the file name or file type you expected.
The name may not match the words on the download button. A statement might arrive as a string of numbers, and a photograph may keep the camera’s original file name.
If it still is not obvious, search with what you know
- Search for part of the expected name.
- Try the file extension, such as .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, or .jpg.
- Search the Downloads folder before searching the entire computer.
- Check OneDrive if your known folders are synchronized there.
Once you find the file, move it to the folder where you will expect it next time. Leaving every download in one folder only postpones the search.
